Big Ears Dilemma
If you have large ears or those that stick out, you may wish to have Otoplasty ear surgery. This is a cosmetic surgery that reshapes the ears. Sadly, we are judged by how we look, and having ears that are misshapen, uneven, or being called a chimpanzee because your ears stick out, is a real blow to self esteem. Fortunately, the surgery will correct all visible ear problems. Protruding ears can be reshaped by pinning them back at an early age. This helps to develop and strengthen the cartilage. But in cases where that wasn’t done, surgery is the only option for improvement. Be sure to arm yourself with all pertinent information, surgeon qualifications, risks and down time before making your surgery appointment. Get to know your plastic surgeon and be sure he has done many cosmetic surgeries such as Otoplasty more than just a few times. He should have before and after photos plus positive reviews available for you to look at.
The cost for ear surgery is about $2,000 to $4,000. You may be able to be put on a payment plan if your surgeon agrees. Once you have decided upon a time for your surgery for Octoplasty, the doctor will make a mark with a pen on the back of your ears right in the crease behind the ears. This is where he will make his incision for the actual procedure. You will be given an anesthetic, and he then reshapes the cartilage and uses stitches to stabilize it. The surgery itself should take no more than two hours.
When the plastic cosmetic surgery is completed, you will be wheeled into the recovery room where you will be watched until it is deemed you may return home. Recovery is simple and almost painless, but may take up to several weeks to be completely healed. Side effects are swelling, bruising and pain for which you will be given medication. Some patients are worried when they see how swollen their ears look because they think their ears look even larger, but once the swelling goes down, the ears are going to look great. You may find your head has been bandaged, and be advised you will probably be given a headband to wear for extra support. In one week, all bandages will be eliminated completely. Also within one week, you may return to school or work.
